Can U.S. and Foreign Investors Invest in Korean Stocks?

Can U.S. and Foreign Investors Invest in Korean Stocks?

The answer is yes. U.S. citizens and other foreign investors can invest in companies listed on Korea's KOSPI and KOSDAQ stock markets.

In fact, foreign investors account for a significant portion of trading activity in the Korean stock market. Many of Korea's largest publicly traded companies, including Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, have substantial foreign ownership. However, certain industries that are considered strategically important to Korea may be subject to foreign ownership restrictions.

1. Investing Through an International Brokerage Account (Most Common Method)

The easiest and most common way for U.S.-based investors to purchase Korean stocks is through an international brokerage firm that provides access to the Korean stock market.

Some of the well-known brokerage firms include:

  • Interactive Brokers

  • Charles Schwab (for certain international investment products)

  • Fidelity Investments (primarily through Korean ETFs rather than direct stock trading)

Typical Investment Process

  1. Open an international brokerage account.

  2. Apply for access to the Korean stock market.

  3. Complete the Know Your Customer (KYC) identity verification process.

  4. Fund your account and convert U.S. dollars (USD) into Korean won (KRW).

  5. Buy and sell Korean stocks through the Korea Exchange (KRX).

2. Opening an Account with a Korean Securities Company

Foreign nationals who reside in Korea or are able to visit Korea may also open an investment account directly with a Korean brokerage firm.

Major Korean brokerage firms include:

  • Mirae Asset Securities

  • NH Investment & Securities

  • Samsung Securities

  • KB Securities

Commonly Required Documents

  • Passport

  • U.S. driver's license or proof of address

  • Tax Identification Number (TIN)

  • Bank account information

For non-resident foreign investors, many Korean brokerage firms can assist with account opening procedures or arrange for a Standing Proxy to facilitate investment transactions.

Example: Buying Samsung Electronics Shares

If a U.S. investor wishes to purchase shares of Samsung Electronics, the process is relatively straightforward:

  • Open an account with Interactive Brokers (or another brokerage that offers Korean market access)

  • Deposit U.S. dollars

  • Convert USD into Korean won

  • Place an order for Samsung Electronics shares

Once the order is executed, the transaction is completed directly through the Korea Exchange (KRX).

Investing Through Korean ETFs

For investors who prefer broad market exposure rather than selecting individual stocks, Korean-focused Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) provide an excellent alternative.

Popular examples include:

  • iShares Korea ETFs

  • Franklin Templeton Korea ETFs

These ETFs can generally be traded through U.S. brokerage accounts just like any other U.S.-listed ETF, making them a convenient option for international investors.

Tax Considerations

Foreign investors should also understand the tax implications of investing in Korean securities.

  • Dividend income may be subject to Korean withholding tax.

  • Capital gains taxation depends on applicable tax treaties between countries, the investor's residency status, and the type of investment.

U.S. taxpayers may also have reporting obligations for foreign financial assets under U.S. regulations such as FBAR and FATCA. Investors with substantial overseas holdings are strongly encouraged to consult with a qualified tax advisor.

Korea Continues to Welcome Foreign Investment

The Korean government has been actively improving market accessibility for international investors. Recent reforms include enhancements to trading and settlement systems, expanded English-language disclosures, and extended market settlement services to better align Korea's capital markets with global standards.

As Korea continues to strengthen its position as one of Asia's leading financial markets, international investors are finding it increasingly accessible and attractive to participate in the growth of Korean companies.
