Compare Medicare Plans

Medigap

Medicare Advantage, 즉 Part C

Original Medicare

Part D

Medigap

Part A + Part B + Part D + Medigap

Medicare Advantage

  • Part A 병원보험

  • Part B

  • Part D

Medicare Advantage

3. Original Medicare

  • Original Medicare

4. Medicare Advantage

5. Medicare Advantage

HMO

Health Maintenance Organization

PPO

Preferred Provider Organization

SNP

Special Needs Plan

6. Part D

7. Medigap

대부분의 주에서는 Plan A, B, D, G, K, L, M, N 등 문자로 구분합니다. 메디케어의 Part A·B·C·D와 Medigap의 Plan A·B·D 등은 이름이 비슷하지만 서로 다른 개념입니다.

  • Part B

  • Part B

  • Medicare

English Information

Which Medicare Coverage Option Is Right for You?

There are two main ways to receive Medicare benefits.

Option 1

Original Medicare + Part D + optional Medigap

Option 2

Medicare Advantage, also called Part C

Neither option is best for everyone. The appropriate choice depends on your doctors, hospitals, prescriptions, health needs, budget, travel plans, and location.

1. Two Ways to Receive Medicare Benefits

Original Medicare

Original Medicare consists of federally administered Part A and Part B.

You may add:

  • Part D for prescription drug coverage

  • Medigap to help pay certain out-of-pocket costs

  • Other coverage from an employer, union, or Medicaid

A common combination is:

Part A + Part B + Part D + Medigap

Each type of coverage serves a different purpose and may have a separate premium.

Medicare Advantage

Medicare Advantage provides Part A and Part B benefits through a Medicare-approved private insurance company.

Most plans combine:

  • Part A hospital coverage

  • Part B medical coverage

  • Part D prescription drug coverage

  • Additional dental, vision, or hearing benefits in some plans

A common arrangement is:

One Medicare Advantage plan for medical and prescription drug benefits

You must continue paying your Part B premium while enrolled in Medicare Advantage.

Plan managementSeveral policies may need to be managedBenefits may be managed through one plan

Premiums, deductibles, copayments, networks, and additional benefits vary by plan and location.

3. Who May Prefer Original Medicare?

Original Medicare may be worth considering if you:

  • Want broad access to doctors and hospitals across the United States

  • See multiple specialists

  • Prefer not to obtain referrals for specialist care

  • Travel frequently or live in more than one state

  • Want Medigap to help reduce certain out-of-pocket costs

  • Value provider flexibility even if monthly premiums may be higher

Possible Advantages

  • Broad access to providers that accept Medicare

  • No routine specialist referral requirement

  • Generally no private-plan provider network

  • Medigap may help cover certain out-of-pocket costs

  • May be convenient for frequent domestic travelers

Points to Review

  • A separate Part D plan may be needed.

  • Medigap requires an additional premium.

  • Original Medicare generally has no annual out-of-pocket maximum.

  • Routine dental, vision, and hearing services are generally not included.

  • Medigap options may be limited or cost more if you miss your protected enrollment period.

4. Who May Prefer Medicare Advantage?

Medicare Advantage may be worth considering if you:

  • Prefer medical and drug benefits combined in one plan

  • Receive most care within your local area

  • Have doctors and hospitals participating in the plan’s network

  • Want additional dental, vision, or hearing benefits

  • Want an annual out-of-pocket maximum

  • Are comfortable following network, referral, and prior authorization rules

Possible Advantages

  • Most plans include prescription drug coverage.

  • Several benefits may be managed through one plan.

  • Some plans may have no additional monthly plan premium.

  • Plans may provide dental, vision, hearing, and wellness benefits.

  • Plans have an annual maximum for covered Part A and Part B out-of-pocket costs.

Points to Review

  • Non-emergency care may require use of network providers.

  • Specialist referrals may be required.

  • Certain services may require prior authorization.

  • Routine care outside the plan’s service area may be limited.

  • Benefits, costs, formularies, and provider networks may change each year.

  • Medigap cannot be used with Medicare Advantage.

5. Types of Medicare Advantage Plans

HMO

An HMO generally requires members to use network doctors and hospitals.

  • A primary care provider may be required.

  • Referrals may be needed for specialist care.

  • Out-of-network non-emergency care may not be covered.

  • Following network rules may make costs more predictable.

PPO

A PPO often allows members to use both network and out-of-network providers.

  • Network care generally costs less.

  • Out-of-network care may cost more.

  • Specialist referrals are often not required.

  • Provider choice may be broader than with an HMO.

SNP

A Special Needs Plan serves people with specific needs, such as:

  • People who qualify for both Medicare and Medicaid

  • People with certain chronic conditions

  • People who live in an institution or require an institutional level of care

Eligibility and benefits vary by plan.

Other Plan Types

PFFS, MSA, and other plan types may be available in certain locations. Not every type of plan is available in every area.

6. Comparing Part D Drug Plans

Do not compare Part D plans by premium alone. Compare the estimated annual cost of the medications you actually take.

Review:

  • Whether every medication is on the plan’s formulary

  • The drug tier assigned to each medication

  • Whether your pharmacy participates in the network

  • Whether your pharmacy is a preferred pharmacy

  • Which drugs are subject to the deductible

  • Prior authorization or step-therapy requirements

  • Quantity limits

  • Mail-order options

  • Estimated total annual drug costs

Prepare a list of medication names, dosages, frequency, and preferred pharmacies before comparing plans.

The Part D plan with the lowest premium may not have the lowest total prescription cost.

7. Comparing Medigap Plans

Medigap supplements Original Medicare by helping pay certain deductibles, copayments, and coinsurance.

In most states, Medigap plans are identified by letters such as Plans A, B, D, G, K, L, M, and N. Medicare Parts A, B, C, and D are different from the lettered Medigap plans.

Important Features

  • Benefits are standardized within each lettered plan.

  • Plan G from one company provides the same basic standardized benefits as Plan G from another company.

  • Premiums, discounts, customer service, and future rate increases may differ.

  • Not every insurer offers every lettered plan.

  • Massachusetts, Minnesota, and Wisconsin standardize Medigap differently.

Compare:

  • Current monthly premium

  • Pricing method as you age

  • Past premium increases

  • Household or automatic-payment discounts

  • Foreign travel emergency coverage

  • Part B excess-charge coverage

  • Copayments and deductibles

  • Customer service

Enrollment Timing

Your one-time six-month Medigap Open Enrollment Period generally begins the first month you are age 65 or older and enrolled in Part B.

After this period, unless another protection applies, you may:

  • Be required to answer health questions

  • Be denied a policy

  • Pay a higher premium

  • Have difficulty changing policies later

Consider future flexibility, not only the current premium, when choosing between Medicare Advantage and Medigap.

8. Compare Total Cost, Not Just Premiums

Estimate all of the following:

  • Part B premium

  • Additional plan premium

  • Part D or Medigap premium

  • Annual deductibles

  • Primary care and specialist copayments

  • Hospital and emergency room costs

  • Coinsurance for tests and treatments

  • Prescription costs

  • Out-of-network charges

  • Annual out-of-pocket maximum

A low-premium plan may require more cost sharing when services are used. A higher-premium option may provide more predictable expenses for someone who uses frequent medical care.

The important number is your estimated total annual cost—not only the monthly premium.

9. Plan Comparison Checklist

Doctors and Hospitals

  • Can I continue seeing my current doctors?

  • Are my specialists in the network?

  • Are my preferred hospital and medical group included?

  • Have I confirmed participation with both the provider and the insurance plan?

Prescriptions

  • Are all my medications covered?

  • How do costs differ by pharmacy?

  • Is prior authorization or step therapy required?

  • Could the formulary change next year?

Costs

  • What is the monthly premium?

  • What are the deductibles and copayments?

  • What will I pay for a hospital stay or outpatient surgery?

  • What is the annual out-of-pocket maximum?

  • Do dental or vision benefits have separate limits?

Convenience

  • Are specialist referrals required?

  • Which services require prior authorization?

  • Is Korean-language customer assistance available?

  • Is my pharmacy a preferred pharmacy?

  • Can I receive routine care while traveling or staying in another state?

10. Avoid These Common Mistakes

Do Not Choose Based Only on Extra Benefits

Dental, vision, hearing, and wellness benefits may be useful, but access to doctors, hospitals, and medications may be more important.

A “$0 Plan Premium” Does Not Mean “$0 Health Care”

You must continue paying the Part B premium. Deductibles, copayments, and coinsurance may still apply when you receive care.

“My Doctor Accepts Medicare” May Not Be Enough

Accepting Original Medicare is different from participating in a particular Medicare Advantage network. Verify the complete plan name.

This Year’s Coverage May Change Next Year

Premiums, copayments, formularies, additional benefits, and provider networks may change annually. Review the plan’s Annual Notice of Change each year.

Information to Prepare

Bring the following information when comparing plans:

  • Medicare card

  • Current insurance card

  • Complete medication list

  • Names of primary care doctors and specialists

  • Preferred hospitals and pharmacies

  • Expected procedures or treatments

  • Domestic and international travel plans

  • Medicaid or Extra Help status

Choose a plan according to your own health and financial circumstances—not simply because it works well for someone else.
